Ordering a Sequence of Archwires

After approving the setup, many SureSmile doctors order two or three initial wire pairs with the same prescription but different cross-section to more comfortably move patients into SureSmile treatment. For example; a doctor may start with 16 x 22 NiTi, and then change to 17 x 25. Since it can be time-consuming to enter wire orders individually, the wire sequencing feature allows you to set up some default sequences and then choose from these sequences when it is time to order wires for a patient.

Pre-define your wire sequences

Since many practices use the same sequence of wires for most patients, SureSmile allows you to pre-define your wire sequences under preferences. Go to your Preferences page and click the Wires tab. The wire sequences section is visible and editable by all user types. SureSmile includes a default labial and default lingual wire sequence. You cannot edit the default wire sequences, but you can copy a default wire sequence, rename it and then edit it to create your own wire sequence. Alternately, click the New Wire Sequence button to create a completely new wire sequence. For detailed instructions, go to Define Wire Sequences.

Order a sequence of wires

As you order wires for each patient, you can apply one of the SureSmile default wire sequences, or you can apply one of your own wire sequences.

  1. Start a wire order using one of the following methods:
    • From the New menu, select Wire.
      or
    • Create a wire copy. (see Copy a Wire Order.)
      or
    • Select the Create Wire Order Next option after you approve the setup.

The Create New Wire window opens.

  1. (Optional) If you want to change the plan which the wires will be based on, select from the list.
  2. (Optional) Copy overrides from previously ordered wires to the upper and lower arches.
  3. Click Apply Wire Sequence. The Wire Sequence window opens with the default pre-defined wire sequence displayed.
  4. Click the Select Wire Sequence drop-down and choose the appropriate pre-defined wire sequence for this patient.

NOTE: If the patient has a combination lingual/labial treatment and you select a wire sequence that has labial or lingual wires for both arches, a new warning will be displayed: Warning: Labial/Lingual conflict.

  1. Make any necessary changes to the wire sequence for this patient. After you are finished reviewing and editing the wire sequence per the procedures detailed in the Wire Sequence Tab topic, you are ready to submit the order. When finished, click Apply Sequence.

Result: It takes about the same time to generate the wire sequence as it does to generate a single wire order. When the wire sequence finishes generating, the name of the sequence appears in the links (bread crumbs) at the top of the window. The sequence of wires is shown at the top of the Wire Sequence tab to the right of Select Model:. The cross-section and wire materials options are not available on the Order tab for a wire sequence. Instead, to make any changes to wire materials or cross-sections, you must use the Wire Sequence tab.

  1. (Optional) To make changes to particular wires in a sequence, for example to select a different cross-section or add over-corrections, go to the Wire Sequence tab and select the Single Wire or Multi-Wire option.
    • Single Wire - Similar view to the Wire tab for a single wire. Allows you to make all movements to a single wire.
    • Multi-Wire - Allows you to view values for a single movement type for all of the wires in a sequence.

Tips for making changes on the Wire Sequence tab:

    • To display a particular wire in the sequence, select the corresponding small numbered tab to the right of Select Model:
    • Select the Upper or Lower option to select the wire material and cross-section for each arch.
    • Enter the values in the table as needed for each arch.
Result: The archwire on the model on the right side of the screen will reflect the values you entered.
    • (Optional) Click in the Order Name box and rename the archwire order to indicate the changes just made (e.g., Wire2 - RCOS/EXP/TORQUE].
    • (Optional) To rename the individual wires in a wire sequence, go to the Wire Sequence tab and click the small tab for the individual wire. Highlight the old name in the Order Name box and type the new name over it. Click out of the Order Name box and the new name is shown on the tab for the individual wire. Click OK to save the new name.

See the Wire Sequence Tab topic for more details.

  1. To order your wire sequence, select the Order tab. and click the Submit Wire Sequence button.

Result: The sequence splits into individual wire orders. Notice the wire names appear in the product drop-down list and in the timeline. (Prior to being submitted, the Wire sequence is shown in the timeline as one element, but after the order is submitted, the wires are listed individually.)

NOTE: If you try to order a wire that is potentially unbendable by the SureSmile robots, the following message appears on the Submit Wire dialog box: "Note: the Robots may not be able to bend the [upper/lower] wire. The Digital Lab will contact you if adjustments are required."

Wire Sequence order naming conventions

Wire sequence orders follow this naming convention:

<name of setup/simulation wire is based on><name of wire in sequence> <limit % (if not 100%)><patient's initials>

For example: WS 1 Wire 1 - 60% AW

TIP: If you start a wire order without choosing the sequence option, but then decide to order a sequence of wires instead, just click the Wire Sequence button on the Order tab before you order the wire.

Copy changes to subsequent wires in a sequence

If you make wire design changes such as entering overrides or adding Curve of Spee, you can copy these changes to subsequent wires in the sequence.

  1. From the Wire Sequence tab, enter your wire design changes in the earliest wire applicable in the sequence.
  2. Click Update Next Wires.

Result: The changes are copied to all subsequence wires in the sequence.

Add a wire to a sequence in single wire view

  1. From the Wire Sequence tab, select the Upper or Lower arch.
  2. Select the Single Wire view. Click the small tab for the wire you want to duplicate.
  3. Click Add Wire. A new wire appears in the sequence preceding the selected wire.
  4. If you wish to modify the new wire, see Order a sequence of wires with overrides.

Add a wire to a sequence in multi-wire view

  1. From the Wire Sequence tab, select the Upper or Lower arch.
  2. Select the Multi-Wire view. Click in any cell in the table row to highlight the row for the wire you want to duplicate.
  3. Click Add Wire. A new row for the new wire appears in the table above the selected wire.
  4. If you wish to modify the new wire, see Order a sequence of wires with overrides.

Remove a wire from a sequence in single-wire view

  1. From the Wire Sequence tab, select the Upper or Lower arch.
  2. Select the Single Wire view. Click the small tab  for the wire you want to remove.
  3. Click Remove Wire.

Note: When you display the last wire in a sequence, the Remove Wire button is dimmed and cannot be clicked.

Remove a wire from a sequence in multi-wire view

  1. From the Wire Sequence tab, select the Upper or Lower arch.
  2. Select the Multi-Wire view. Click in any cell in the table row to highlight the row for the wire you want to remove.
  3. Click Remove Wire.

Note: You cannot remove the last wire in a wire sequence, as this wire represents the target or "setup" of the sequence. Tor remove a wire sequence completely, go to the Order tab and click the Remove Wire button.
