This section of the help guides you through the wire design and order process. As part of this process, you may apply limit values and over-corrections to your wires as needed.
Generally, patients are ready for SureSmile custom archwires when they are somewhat leveled and aligned. For most patients, this occurs within the first 3-6 months of conventional orthodontic treatment.
The following minimum treatment conditions should be met before SureSmile wires are used:
Spaces are closed to 3 mm per arch
Less than 10 degrees of rotation remains
Vertical steps are all under 1.5 mm
As the treating doctor, it is up to you to determine when each patient is ready for SureSmile archwires. These recommendations are only guidelines. They are not intended to override your clinical expertise.
Although you can start a request for an archwire anytime, SureSmile requires a therapeutic model and an approved setup to create custom archwires.
After you make adjustments to your archwire design and order archwires, SureSmile combines the information outlined in the following table to produce custom-bent archwires.

Limitations: SureSmile archwires are effective in terms of providing correct intra-arch relationships only. SureSmile depends on the Orthodontist’s clinical judgment to manage inter-arch relationships and space. Dentsply Sirona does not determine patient care. Dentsply Sirona only provides therapeutics as directed by the doctor.
Tip: When you receive an archwire package, Dentsply Sirona recommends that you check the archwires against your plan.
Full Expression Archwire (setup wire) - a wire designed to move the teeth to the planned final positions based on the setup. This is the wire based on the setup and created automatically by SureSmile if you do not specify any overrides,
Full Expression Archwires (with overrides) - this is the wire based on the setup AND your overrides. Overrides are over-corrections made to a SureSmile archwire prescription automatically generated by SureSmile from the setup. Examples of these are:
Overcorrected wires
Undercorrected (undersized) wires
Limit wires with passive (0%) segments
Limit value % wires (e.g., 75%, 50%, 25%)
Straight archwires
Modification Wires - these are wires based on a new archwire prescription created by you, when the original wire or wires are not expressing the setup as originally planned.
Setup Modification Wire (based on treatment simulation) - A new wire based on a new treatment simulation. This new wire includes overrides from the last inserted wire plus the modification values derived from the new treatment simulation.
Compensation Wire (based on progress model) - An archwire derived from a progress model that is intended to get a patient back on track and achieve the treatment objectives of the setup plan.
