Combination Therapy

When treating a patient with combination therapy, that is conventional therapy for one arch and aligner therapy for the other, do NOT create a separate patient record for this model. Instead order a new a la carte therapeutic model following the steps below.

To produce the staged models for one arch only while treating the other arch conventionally:

  1. Order a new a la carte therapeutic model.

Note: Once you order this new therapeutic model, you will not be able to order custom archwires referencing this model unless you first order a new setup.

  1. Use an intraoral scan with a SureSmile certified optical scanner for the a-la-carte therapeutic model.
  2. Update the dental exam for the unbonded arch to correspond to the scan data.
  3.  Include current photos to support tooth modeling. You can use x-rays from the previous therapeutic scan appointment, but if you do this, type a note to the Digital Lab such as “Please use the previous Thx records for reference per the doctor.”
  4. Once the a la carte therapeutic model is approved, proceed to create a setup or simulation and generate your series of staged models as usual, and adding the attachments to the model as needed. (For detailed procedures for creating staged models and adding attachments, please see the online SureSmile help topics: Treatment Planning> Aligners.)
