Therapeutic Models and Treatment Planning

In SureSmile, a therapeutic model is a 3D model of the patient’s individual tooth anatomy and bracket positions. This model is created from an intraoral scan and/or an in-vivo CBCT scan in combination with photos and x-rays.

Here is the typical process for ordering and reviewing a therapeutic model:

  1. Level and align the patient's teeth using conventional treatment methods.
  2. When you are ready to start treatment with SureSmile custom archwires, remove the conventional wires and take an intraoral or CBCT scan.
  3. Take photos and X-rays to update records to the current state.
  4. Create and order a therapeutic model in SureSmile.
  5. After you submit the order, the Digital Lab processes your scan data and, using the photos and x-rays as references, creates a 3D model of the patient’s current dentition. Depending on the type of scan that you performed, the model may include gingiva and/or bone.
  6. When the Digital Lab completes the therapeutic model, you receive the model in a digital format so that you can review it for accuracy.

After you review and approve the output from the Digital Lab, this therapeutic model is the basis for your treatment planning.

Why review the therapeutic model?

The therapeutic model is a 3D representation of the current dentition of the patient created by the Digital Lab based on the raw scan data, records and other information you provided. Moving forward, this therapeutic model will be used as the basis for your treatment planning. It is very important that you conduct a systematic and careful review of this therapeutic model to verify its accuracy before you start treatment planning. Any small errors or inconsistencies in the model can adversely affect your treatment plan.
