Ordering a SureSmile Case

This section of the online help describes the steps and procedures for ordering SureSmile cases and associated products. Each SureSmile case type is made up of a standard set of SureSmile treatment models and products typically used in treatment. Each product in a SureSmile case type is a component of the SureSmile treatment approach and is ordered at different phases of the patient's treatment.

Note: Do not confuse these SureSmile products with the SureSmile renewable consumable supplies such as extra orascanner mirrors or cases of SureWhite. To order these renewable supplies, please see Reordering Consumable Supplies,

There are four case types, plus a (none) category to order SureSmile products on a fee-per-item basis, or "a la carte."

Tip: If most of your cases will always be one of the case types you can set this case type as your default choice for new patient records on the preferences page under the Treatment tab>Default case type option.

Standard case type

The standard case type accommodates the most common treatment approach in SureSmile.

The Standard case type includes:

Note: Some contracts may also include 1 diagnostic model (from optical scan only)

Standard w/IDB case type

The Standard w/ IDB case type bundles a set of IDB trays with a standard SureSmile case. This case type offers a fast-track workflow for starting your patients in SureSmile:

  1. You scan the patient, order the initial therapeutic model and provide instructions for a full setup with planned bracket placement, all in a single order.

  2. SureSmile Digital Lab technicians create the model, setup, place the brackets, design the IDB trays, and return for your review within 10 business days.

  3. You review the setup, bracket placement and tray designs, and order the initial wire pair with the trays.

  4. We fabricate and ship the IDB trays and initial wires to you in a single package within 10 business days.

The Standard w/IDB case type includes:

Note: Some contracts may also include 1 diagnostic model (from optical scan only)

Aligner case type

The Aligner case type is for patients who will receive aligners based on SureSmile models, but will not be bonded nor receive wires. This case type includes one unbonded therapeutic model, which should be acquired from an intraoral scan that captures gingiva. For example, you can use your OraScanner, iTero, etc. to capture the scan for the Aligner case. (A supplemental CBCT scan can be used, if desired, to add roots and bone to the model .) The aligner case type also includes one setup and series of staged models with assistance from SureSmile Digital Lab technicians. Select an Aligner case type to benefit from the expertise of our Digital Lab technicians in setting up your target for aligner therapy, and then generating and adjusting your series of staged models.

The Aligner case type includes:

Extended case type

The Extended case type is recommended for cases that will need multiple therapeutic scans and/or setups such as:

The Extended case type includes:

The extended case type includes the same items as a standard case type, but for a small additional fee, you can order up to a total of five therapeutic models and a total of five setups without incurring a la carte fees.

Note: For specific questions about case fees, please contact your Account Manager.

(none)

Select (none) to order most SureSmile products on a fee-per-item basis, or "a la carte." For example you would use the None case type for the following scenarios:

Fee-per-service products

When a product is not included in a case type, it is considered a fee-per-service product and a separate fee is charged. Here is a list of fee-per-service products:

Fee-per-Item Use
Diagnostic model
  • diagnostic purposes
  • develop different simulations
  • aligner therapeutic model design
  • IDB tray design
  • marketing purposes
Additional therapeutic model based on CBCT data
  • add roots and bone to a therapeutic model from surface scan
Additional therapeutic model based on a surface scan
  • as basis of new setup if teeth are not moving as planned
  • best possible diagnostic model for aligner therapy (unbonded therapeutic model)
  • best possible diagnostic model for study/analysis (unbonded therapeutic model)
  • post-surgical planning
  • mixed treatment (aligner therapy on one arch and brackets on opposing arch)
Premium model
  • higher accuracy of crown data from an optical scan combined with the roots and bone from a CBCT scan
  • tooth crowns modeled to highest standards
Additional setup
  • tooth or anatomy updates
  • teeth are not moving as planned
Final model
  • quality grading
  • comparison purposes
  • record keeping.
Staged Models
  • send files to Dentsply Sirona for printing as 3D models
  • use printed models to create your own aligners
Aligners
  • order aligners from Dentsply Sirona
IDB Trays
  • send IDB tray simulation for printing and fabrication by Dentsply Sirona

Notes:

There are no case fees if you only order a diagnostic model for storage purposes or to make aligner trays. However an "a la carte" fee for a single diagnostic model will be charged.

Due to the inaccuracy of the data, we do NOT support unbonded therapeutic models based on scans captured from CBCT of a plaster model. (If you attach this data source to an in vivo scan type, it will be rejected.) We will accept an optical scan of a plaster model, however we recommend that you continue to provide Therapeutic Scan data captured at a patient appointment such as in vivo CBCT, intraoral OraScan, or an intraoral scan by a certified 3rd party scanner.

Alternative purpose in Standard cases: The unbonded therapeutic model may also be beneficial in cases where you want as much diagnostic information as possible. Before bonding, order this scan type as a therapeutic model and you will receive tooth models produced to the standards of a Therapeutic along with linkage to the smile photo. (A diagnostic model is linked to the ceph, but not the smile photo.)
