Assign Brackets

The Dental Examination page appears in a new model order until the model has been returned for review.

Although you can view the Brackets/Attachments tab from the patient overview, you must use the Brackets tab on the Dental Examination page to record a patient’s bracket prescription and manage bracket sets.

You have the option to enter the patient’s bracket prescription before or after the bonding appointment. However, the information must be entered or updated prior to submitting the therapeutic model or update scan orders. A current and correct bracket prescription is required by the Digital Lab to process scans and  create custom archwires. Each jaw must have a minimum of 6 brackets assigned. Otherwise the order is placed in a Provide Information state and cannot be processed until you add the additional brackets.

You can assign one bracket at a time or you can assign a bracket set. If you mix labial and lingual brackets on a single jaw, a warning appears. Select either the Labial or Lingual button to indicate which treatment type you want. Likewise if you mix treatment types between jaws, i.e. if you choose lingual brackets for the upper jaw and labial brackets for the lower jaw, a warning appears, asking if you are certain you want to bond the brackets of each jaw differently. You must click either Yes or No to proceed.

Why is identification of the brackets  important to a SureSmile patient's treatment?

The accuracy of each bracket model is critical since brackets are part of the formula for computing the patient's custom wire design. To determine a bracket's position relative to a tooth, Digital Lab software runs a registration process to precisely position the bracket from the bracket library to the scan data.

Different slot size warning

When you add a bracket to a dental exam that already contains one or more brackets (or a bracket set, you get a warning if the slot size of the bracket being added is different from the slot size of those brackets already added.

If you really intend to add a bracket with a different slot size, click Apply. If you intend to add more brackets for this case with different slot sizes, select the Ignore further warnings check box.

Mark as Bonded or Not Bonded

You can assign brackets to the patient at the beginning of treatment, at the bonding appointment, or at any other time prior to ordering a therapeutic model. The Mark Bonded/Not Bonded buttons allow you to distinguish between the bracket prescription planned for this patient and brackets that are actually bonded.

On the Brackets tab from the patient overview or from the dental examination page, you can distinguish bonded brackets from unbonded by the background of the bracket: a white background indicates not bonded. If it is bonded, a green background indicates labial brackets and a blue background indicates lingual brackets.

The following table explains when to use these buttons on the Brackets tab. To affect a single tooth, you must first select it in the tooth chart.

Button When to Use
Mark Bonded The tooth has been bonded with this prescription.
Mark Not Bonded Prescription has been determined, but the tooth will be bonded later.
Mark All Bonded The patient has been bonded with this prescription, or the bonding tray has been checked.
Mark All Not Bonded Prescription has been determined, but the patient is not bonded.

When setting up the bonding tray, check the tray against the brackets assigned for this patient. They must match. If the tooth chart is not current, follow the steps for updating the dental exam and assigning brackets.

If the bracket assignments are correct and the patient is bonded, click Mark All Bonded.
